Being Present is an original devised performance exploring the ways in which online friendships develop, maintain, and often fall apart. All rehearsals, script development, and performances were conducted through computer-mediated communication, connecting performers Gabi Vigueira in Baton Rouge, LA and Jason Jedrusiak in Cambridge, MA. Following threads of our own personal experiences in the formation of online connections, several reoccurring themes surfaced: the intense intimacy that can develop quickly yet drop at an instant in digital contexts; the ease of communicating via text; and the desire for online connections stemming from physical loneliness. Using these narratives along with personal reflection on Vigueira and Jedrusiak’s own journey in developing a devised performance without having met in person, Being Present was a study in the nature of long-distance intimacy and digital liveness.
